The old-fashioned image of an in-house technical support team is probably a small dingy office full of flashing lights and the smell of stale coffee. Few ventured in and ever fewer ventured out. Sure you knew what they did, sort of, but how they did it or how to do it yourself was a complete mystery.

Email quotas are common in business. They’re used to manage the amount of data each individual uses for their email and to control email archive requirements. The phrase ‘quick fix’ has developed a bit of a negative connotation. It’s a phrase that usually follows words like ‘only’ or ‘just’. If you tell people you have a quick fix solution, people don’t expect much. Quick fix has become another way of saying temporary.
In many cases this reputation is justified. Replacing the broken battery cover on your TV remote with scotch tape is never going to be a permanent measure, but it is quick. Borrowing to cover cash flow problems works in the short term, but it could get you into real trouble in the long term. That doesn’t mean that all quick fixes are bad ideas. Because what is email archiving, if it’s not a quick fix?

Sometimes when you show someone a piece of technology they’ve never seen before, it can make you feel like a magician. You see that same mix of surprise and delight that you imagine a magician gets when his assistant’s legs start to move in a box 10 feet from her torso. It’s a nice feeling and the reason a lot of us rush out to buy the latest smartphone or gadget. But consumer products aren’t the only technologies that can do magic tricks.
